Olympia
Park Cleanup Completed November 3, 2001
On
Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, the "Emerald Ring" moved one step closer to
becoming a reality.
The
"Emerald Ring" is the undeveloped greenways around Mount Washington.
The vision for Mount Washington is to have a system of walking trails
encircling the neighborhood, connecting existing parks with the Grandview
walkways.
The
clean up culminated months of work by PA CleanWays of Allegheny County,
the Friends of Mount Washington Park, Partners in Parks, the Pennsylvania
Resource Council, and the Mt. Washington CDC. Through the tireless efforts
of the 16 volunteers, and with the help of a truck, van and ropes, 93
tires were pulled up the hill, plus two shopping carts, miscellaneous
scrap metal and a tombstone.
Dennis
Meyer from Partners in Parks coordinated arrangements for the City of
Pittsburgh Department of Public Works to provide a roll off container
for the fugitive tires. The tires were hauled away to storage for later
recycling.
This
clean up posed unique challenges with the location over a hillside in
a ravine below and the potential for large numbers of mosquitoes. The
original date for clean up was June, 2001, but rain forced rescheduling
to a fall timeframe.
A
special thank-you goes out to Susan Brandt, Director of the Mount Washington
Community Development Corporation, Deb Friss, a member of Friends of
Mount Washington Parks, and to the volunteers who strained muscles and
helped the day of the clean up. The next clean up project is planned
for early Spring in Hazelwood.
Anyone who would like the PA CleanWays of Allegheny County Chapter to
assist their group in planning a clean up in their community should
contact the chapter office.
