Olympia
Park Cleanup
PA
CleanWays of Allegheny County has facilitated the second illegal dump
cleanup project in Olympia Park in Mt. Washington. This cleanup project
was begun in November 2001 with the first cleanup effort in the park.
It was quickly recognized that this project would entail a minimum of
three cleanup dates to properly remove all of the various types of dumped
materials.
On
November 16, 2002, the phase two cleanup occurred. Working in partnership
with the City of Pittsburgh - Public Works and Partners in Parks departments,
the Mt. Washington Community Development Corporation, Cadette/Senior
Girl Scout Troop #1415, and PA CleanWays volunteers, the cleanup project
netted the removal of 192 tires.
Jen
Kurtz, a Senior Girl Scout, partnered with PA CleanWays of Allegheny
County to coordinate all facets of the November 16 cleanup. The final
cleanup date for Olympia Park will be March 1, 2003, to remove the remaining
materials including appliances, toys, and items, which were identified
during the previous two cleanups. This site was originally identified
as a hot spot for illegal dumping through a citywide illegal dump survey
implemented by the chapter over the last two years.
