Greener Update
PA CleanWays of Allegheny
County is implementing a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
Growing Greener grant project.
Our
work, to date, includes, watershed assessments, site visits and outreach
to schools, watershed associations, community groups and other non-profit
organizations. Some of the groups we have been working with include:
-
Nine
Mile Run Watershed Association
-
Horticultural
Society of Western Pennsylvania
-
Chartiers Nature Conservancy
-
Montour
Run Watershed Association
-
Streets
Run Watershed Association
-
Creek Connections Student Symposium
-
Sci-Tech Festival at the Carnegie Science Center
- The City of Pittsburgh
The Quaker Valley
Middle School, Team Orion, is helping with the project by cleaning
and adopting the Little Sewickley Creek. A daylong cleanup was held
on Friday, May 23, 2003. A pre-cleaning educational and safety program
was presented to approximately 130 7th grade students on May 8, 2003
by Carol Popp, PA CleanWays of Allegheny County, Executive Director.
The PA CleanWays Adoption program is a great extension of the students'
desire to keep the Little Sewickley Creek area clean of illegal dumping
and littering. By agreeing to adopt the waterway, the group has committed
to maintaining a clean area for at least two years.
Several on-line
illegal dump surveys have been submitted with information about dumpsites
- but we need your help to find all of the illegal dumpsites in these
waterway areas: Chartiers Creek, Nine Mile Run, Streets Run, Little
Sewickley Creek, Pine Creek, Deer Creek, Montour Run and Plum Creek.
If you know of an illegal dumpsite in your area, please complete
our online illegal dump survey.
