Fugitive Tire Collection - South Pittsburgh
November 13th Tire
Tackle - South Pittsburgh youth organizations are invited to participate
in a fugitive tire round-up. Thanks to the Birmingham Foundation, PA
CleanWays of Allegheny County will hold a tire collection at three locations
in South Pittsburgh on Saturday, November 13th from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Youth living in zip codes 15203, 15210, and 15211 are eligible to participate,
and the collection sites will include Mt. Oliver, Mt. Washington, and
South Side Flats.
Fugitive tires are
tires that have escaped proper disposal and are now hiding out in back
alleys, vacant lots, over hillsides, or in wooded areas. This program
pays pre-registered youth groups (such as church groups, scout troops,
sports teams, etc.) a 50-cent bounty for each tire they capture from
the wilds. In the process, the youth see first-hand just how much trash
is out there, and have the opportunity to discuss the problem and possible
solutions.
These materials
pose a great health risk as a breeding ground for mosquito-borne diseases
and other pests. We are looking for like-minded community organizations
who would like to partner with us for this initiative. Groups MUST pre-register
by contacting the Allegheny Chapter office via phone or e-mail. If you
do not live in South Pittsburgh, and are interested in holding a Fugitive
Tire Collection in your community, contact
the Allegheny chapter to learn more about the program.
