DEP Growing Greener Watershed Assessment Update - Two Fall Stream Sweeps
Planned
PA
CleanWays of Allegheny County continues its efforts to access illegal
dumps in several of Allegheny County's watersheds thanks to the support
of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Increased
resources are being dedicated to the project including the addition
of staff support. Jerry Zona, Project Manager for PA CleanWays, Inc.,
has joined the Allegheny Chapter team to lead the project. The target
watersheds include Streets Run, Turtle Creek, Plum Creek, Nine Mile
Run, Little Sewickley Creek, Deer Creek, Chartiers Creek, Montour Run,
and Pine Creek.
To date, a complete
assessment has been delivered to the Streets Run Watershed Association,
and volunteers have cleaned illegal dump sites along Nine Mile Run,
Turtle Creek, Chartiers Creek, and Streets Run. Jerry's plan entails
finishing 75% of the assessments by December 2004, with remaining assessments
to be completed in the spring of 2005. Watershed organizations and municipalities
have been contacted to aid the project. Nine Mile Run Watershed Association,
Chartiers Nature Conservancy, Streets Run Watershed Association, and
Turtle Creek Watershed Association are on board supporting the effort.
PA American Water Company has contributed additional support to provide
outreach in the Streets Run Watershed communities. A plan is in place
to see the project to its completion.
Residents are encouraged
to contact the PA CleanWays of Allegheny County office to report an
illegal dump site or to report it online at www.pacleanways.org/enf_mainillegaldumpsurvey.html.
