City
of Pittsburgh Survey
In June 2002, PA
CleanWays of Allegheny County completed the City of Pittsburgh Illegal
Dump Survey © 2002, a funded project of The Pittsburgh Foundation. A
total of 138 sites were identified as hot spots for illegal dumping
within the City of Pittsburgh. The research has provided a baseline
of the problem, which is key to the development of site-specific cleanup
plans.
"We
believe understanding the problem of illegal dumping is key to quantifying
the problem and establishing prioritized cleanup goals," commented Carol
Popp, chapter executive director. "This project has created a strong
foundation within the City of Pittsburgh for future PA CleanWays projects,
community cleanups, and adoptions."
This
study will be an invaluable tool to measure the chapter's progress within
the City of Pittsburgh. It was showcased at the November 2002 Municipal
Waste Management Association Fall Summit to illustrate the challenge
of urban littering and illegal dumping. This research has been a springboard
for other chapter activity including a training conducted on October
30, 2002, for municipalities on how to conduct an illegal dump assessment.
A
further expansion of the survey is now being performed throughout Allegheny
County. PA CleanWays of Allegheny County was awarded a 2002 Growing
Greener Grant by the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
to investigate the problem of illegal dumping within nine identified
watershed areas in Allegheny County.
"The
City of Pittsburgh survey is a great tool as we execute our Growing
Greener project," added Popp.
